OCHS Disposed of Central Collegiate, 1970

In 1970, the Oshawa Catholic High School Saints disposed of Central Collegiate. This was on our way to a winning season. I can't remember if the coach was gym teacher Tony White, or if new teacher Tom Chase who took over coaching the football team was at OCHS yet.

Hockey Blast From The Past for Oshawa Residents -- From the Oshawa Times

Man this was a blast from the past for me. I remember my dad taking me to watch a Junior A hockey game at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium when Bobby Orr was a phenom with them. And then we had the hockey series with the "evil empire" the Soviet Union. Not only did the pros play, but they sent junior teams over as well. The Soviet juniors played the Toronto Marlboros, but the Marlies padded their team with Bobby Orr.

I also remember fondly buying hockey sticks at Jim Bishop Sporting Goods on King Street in Oshawa.

Cross Canada Fitness Run at OCHS - early 1970's

If you arrived early for school in the early 1970's, or stayed a bit late, you would see students running the track alone or in a very small group. This was the Cross Canada Fitness run. This was Joe Pender's idea. Essentially they ran continuous laps around the school track that enclosed the football field (this was in the day before soccer was a thing anywhere). The goal was a collective run of 3,426 miles (this was before Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau converted Canada to metric and kilometers) across the breadth of Canada accumulated by the group by jogging around the stationary hamster wheel of a cinders running track. I can't remember if there were any charity collections involved. When this photo of the leaderboard appeared in the Oshawa Times, the group was at Thunder Bay Ontario, which is near where Terry Fox was forced to quit his Marathon of Hope.

The leaderboard pictured here consists of Anne Schillings, Jayne Gallant, Kathie Andrews, Don Hamlyn, Dale Irwin and teacher Joe Pender. This photo is particulary poignant to me because Kathie Andrews was a good friend and she is no longer with us.
